Persepolis

Watch it. Ignore how you feel about animated films. This is brilliantly done. Plus, the main character has my name and spells it the same way. Okay, her name is Marjane (not my name) but everyone calls her Marji (like me). That alone should make you want to see the film.

It's a coming-of-age story set during the late 1970-1990s in Iran (with a major side trip to Vienna). After the fall of the Shah came the Islamic Revolution and the transformation of a "relatively progressive" Iran to an oppressive, war-ridden country. Marji grows up amidst all this chaos with two wonderful parents, an awesome grandmother, and a wavering connection to "God". Poignant,  heart-warming and heart-wrenching, it depicts the quinessential nature of growing up.

I highly rec'd it. (It is in French w/ subtitles).

Did you read the graphic novels? I read them recently. Usually not into that sort of thing, but they were really good.

I haven't read the graphic novels, but I'm really tempted to now. If they match the animation at all, I'll be duly impressed.

But I *like* animated films! ;) You should tell me to ignore how I feel about subtitles... :D

Ignore how you feel about subtitles!

It was kind of neat, because I ended up understanding half of what was being said. Which was good, because some dude's head was blocking my view...
