Swine flu the new Belgian coke?

I wonder if this whole "swine" flu business is just like that Belgian coca-cola business.

That's a very good article, and I do think the media - especially with instant internet coverage - is just going to make things a lot worse. One of the things a poster who lives in Mexico is pointing out is that it's flu season - and every year, people die of the flu. This is not uncommon, and no one is asking the important question - how much higher is the mortality rate than usual? Sure, 100-whatever people have died of 'swine flu', but if you normally have 10,000 deaths per year and your total isn't significantly above that... then what's the issue?

John Stewart did a very nice little segment about the Media flipping out on Monday's Daily Show. He pretty much pointed out that the only reason people are panicking is because news stations are flashing their graphics and being like ZOMG DEATH FROM ABOVE!!! His comment was pretty much "40 possible cases doesn't count as a global pandemic."

I think people freak out a whole lot more than they need to. I think that 24 hour news networks help that. They run out of REAL news so they have to freak out about every little thing to fill all 24 hours. Seriously. My husband said this is going to turn into the new Sars.
