Dog & Cat food recall

My advice (and I'm taking it): Feed a home-cooked or raw diet for your companion animals. While it won't eliminate all food-associated problems (not much will), it will limit concerns.

After Mina's bag of food is gone, I'm no longer feeding her any type of food that isn't locally produced. She will be put on a home-cooked diet. I am writing this as a reminder of my commitment to Mina's Feed Quality Control Protocol.

Ignoring quality control issues, the amount of energy required to transport grains from China to the United States for processing is unecessary. If I can buy locally grown produce, and if I can limit my impact on the planet, Mina can too. :)

That is all.

P.S. Do you have an suggestions for recipes/websites/books that I can check out to make Lola's food?

I can't remember if you feed Lola a vegetarian diet or not? There are a couple of veg dog food books available, but I haven't read them.

If not, I'd suggest these books:

For a home-cooked, not necessarily raw diet (also has some veg recipes):
Dr. Pitcairns Complete Guide to Natural Health: http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=CDN142 (I love this book)
Complete Holistic Dog Book (another fav of mine), Jan Allegretti & Katy Sommers: http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=DN210
Becoming the Chef Your Dog Thinks you are- Micki & Yogi Voisard: http://www.sitstay.com/cgi-bin/sdisp.cgi/BV3.lg.jpg
Cooked Diet Recipes, Monica Segal: http://www.sitstay.com/cgi-bin/sdisp.cgi/BS27.lg.jpg

For a strictly raw diet:
Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy Schultze: http://www.sitstay.com/cgi-bin/sdisp.cgi/BS5.lg.gif
The BARF diet: Ian Billinghurst: http://www.sitstay.com/cgi-bin/sdisp.cgi/BB0001.lg.jpg

Thanks for all the great info :) I'm going to email the list to myself at work so I can print it out and use it as an ordering guideline. I want to get copies for myself and the store.

Thanks for those sources. I am greatly considering feeding Maizie home cooked meals. Can you tell me what you plan on feeding the Miners?

It's sad that it's such a risk every time someone pick up a bag of dog food. :(

I think I'm going to start her on (it may sound gross, fyi):
Daily meal:
- 4-5 chicken necks (or 1-3 turkey necks)
- 2/3 cup muscle meat (chicken or turkey, prolly ground for starters)
- 1.5-2 tbsp veggie puree
- vitamin c supplement (3,000 mg)
- 1 tsp flaxseed oil
- 2 tsp raw apple cider vinegar
- probiotics
- possibly citrus seed extract (initially)
Three times a week
- 1 raw egg from sanctuary
- organ meat

I'll see how she does on that at first - she's pretty active, so I might have to modify some of it.

I've finally gotten over the fear that I won't know how much to feed her, and I'm looking forward to the change. I'm sure Mina will enjoy it too!
