Canine caregiver makes rounds in Elgin
Local pit bull celebrates her 500th visit as a therapy dog

ELGIN -- She lit up the room when she walked in with her black formal gown, feather boa and perfectly manicured magenta fingernails.

She was a lady -- a lady pit bull, that is.

Helen M. Skelnik of Carpentersville gets a visit from therapy dog Taysia and her owner, Joe Remijas, Friday morning at the rehabilitation center of Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Taysia has been visiting Provena St. Joseph Hospital since May 2003. She is celebrating her combined 500th visit; she also visits Rosewood Care Center in Elgin.

Taysia and her owner, Joe Remijas, entered the rehab room at Provena Saint Joseph Hospital on Friday to celebrate the 6-year-old canine's 500th therapeutic pet visit. A Therapy Dogs International-certified therapy dog, Taysia visits both Provena Saint Joseph Hospital and Rosewood Care Center on a weekly basis.
