Author: Nancy Garden, written 1982
Challenge/ban reason: Homosexuality theme.
Bans: In 1993, Olathe, Kansas school officials removed the book from the high school library. A court case ensued, and a federal judge declared 1st Amendment rights of students were violated b/c of the removal. In 1999, school officials did not challenge the ruling and placed the copies back in the library. A public burning of books occurred on the steps Kansas City school district headquarters.
Beautifully written, Garden's book details the emerging love between two teenage girls and the resulting struggle for understanding and acceptance (from others and themselves). Humorous and bittersweet, uplifting and distressing, the fumblings of these two young women are painfully vivid and real. Loved it. :)
