Okay, in  1.5 hours, I'll celebrate Earth Hour

I'll read by candlelight, and my dogs will piss and poop by moonlight.

Not to be snarky... but I've often wondered why people decide to help the environment by burning candles. It's not like that's particularly good for the environment. In fact, you're probably polluting more than if you, say, used only a single compact fluorescent bulb. And certainly more than if you just laid there in the dark, or used a solar-powered light of some sort. :/ I dunno.

Well, it's not like I live life by candlelight. And I would find it a little implausible that me burning one candle = greater energy consumption than having my lights turned on (during that hour).

I'd be interested in any research that states that candles are a great environmental threat than electricity.

Well, I can't vouch for the validity of the numbers (because I only Googled it, and don't have time to hunt down the conversions and whatnot myself) but this is what I found:

A 1" candle burned for 1 hour = 15g CO2
A 100W light bulb pulling electricity from a coal-fired plant = 13 g CO2
A compact fluorescent bulb drawing electricity from a coal-fired plant = 3 g CO2

So 1 candle is better than all the lights, yes, but not better than a single bulb and unplugging all appliances so you're not 'leaking' electricity.

Of course, there's an issue besides CO2 emissions that I think it probably more important, but is being overlooked, and that's light pollution. But how do you strike a balance between darkening cities and public safety? I'm all for seeming more stars, it's awesome out in the country, but at the same time I don't want someone to be able to sneak up an mug me because it's dark before I get off work!

I think I'd support it more if the main issue was light pollution, because that makes sense.
