Part of my job involves tracking California bills that affect animals. This involves perusing a title list of bills introduced. We're getting close to the last date for introduction, so every day a plethora of introduced bills pop up - yesterday there were 519, today 677 and that's just on the Assembly side!

While I am a fan of enacting laws that are beneficial and enforceable, I am flabbergasted by the sheer volume of bills introduced each session. There's a proposed law that would ban the sale of novelty lighters that might appeal to those under the age of 18; I mean, seriously people, come on.

And Senator Florez, bless his heart, has re introduced the dog & cat spay/neuter bill that in the last 2-year session, managed to piss off animal rights advocates as much as breeders. Very daring (he's introducing a bill to ban cattle tail docking, so I can't use any negative adjectives for him).

I enjoy the legislative process, and I feel there is ample room to create real change for animals. At the same time, many of these proposals are an assault on our basic common sense (no one can seriously argue that banning novelty lighters is going to reduce underage smoking or, I dunno, underage arson...ing).
